Air Conditioner Makes Noise Starting Up, While Running or After Shut Off

Squealing AC noise. If you hear a high-pitched squealing noise coming from your air conditioner, it’s most likely the belt connecting the motor to the blower has slipped or it’s the bearings on the condenser fan’s motor. Newer air conditioners don’t use a belt system to operate so chances are if you have an older unit, it’s probably the problem. If it is this belt, you’ll hear the noise inside and outside your home. The belt will need to be replaced to solve the problem. If a newer unit is making this noise, it’s likely the bearings on the condenser fan’s motor. New air conditioning units use direct-drive motors that don’t use belts. This system pulls air across the condenser coils in the compressor. So, with newer air conditioners you will hear squealing or grinding coming from the outdoor unit. This indicates that the motor needs replacement. When you hear a squealing noise coming from your air conditioner you need to call professionals right away to fix the problem.
AC Buzzing sound. A loud buzzing noise coming from your air conditioner is an indication that it’s malfunctioning. This happens when parts become loose, missing or broken feet or refrigerant leaks. This noise also indicates that the compressor may be malfunctioning. In order for your home to stay cool in the summer all the parts of your air conditioner need to work together. If one part gets loose, it will put extra stress on the other parts. When the other parts deal with too much stress the unit will start to make a buzzing sound. These feet are at the base of the air conditioner and can start to crack and breakdown over time. The compressor will lose balance and start to make a buzzing noise when you use it. Air conditioners can also freeze up when they are cooling your home. It sounds strange to hear, but it can happen. If refrigerant starts to leak, it can cause the buzzing sound. If the compressor is malfunctioning it can cause a buzzing sound. The compressor pressurizes and cools the refrigerant down to cool your home. The buzzing sound means that the compressor isn’t working properly. It can also indicate that the electrical voltage of the unit isn’t right.
