In the winter, Las Vegas and its surrounding areas can get very cold. During the winter we often rely on our heating system to keep our homes warm and comfortable. However, there are a number of elements that can be working against your home’s heating system which will slowly affect your utility bills. Poor efficiency can cost homeowners more than they often realize. Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning will share how to improve your home’s heating efficiency for the upcoming winter season.
Air Duct Inspection & Leakage Test
Air Leaks can occur in various areas in the home, starting with the air duct system. It is common for air ducts to leak at adjoining sections, as often the adhesive wears down and splits occur. These splits can cause the warm air to leak out of the air duct and outside the home. Air ducts should be inspected once if not twice a year to ensure there are no leaks in the ductwork. Another common area for leaks are the exterior doors and windows. Both doors and windows can leak if they are not sealed or closed tightly. Check all the windows and doors. Make sure they properly closed and are sealed. Keep in mind, weather stripping may require replacements.
Insulate Attic
The attic insulation plays a vital role in maintaining the interior temperature of the home. Over time the attic insulation can get worn down or damaged. Before the winter season hits, it is recommended to have the attic insulation checked and if needed, replaced or more insulation added. The attic insulation only needs inspection about every 5 years. Most attic insulation can last between 10 years or more.
Furnace Tune Up Checklist
Another way to help improve heating efficiency is by having your heating system tuned up. When the heating system is tuned up, it is inspected, cleaned, and lubricated to ensure the best performance. Not only is the heating system primed and ready for winter, the HVAC technician will look for any components that appear to be broken or wearing down. You can either have the part replaced before they break, or you are to better prepare you for future malfunction and repair. In many cases, the technician can help prolong the wear and tear as well as the life of the furnace.
Change Air Filters
Changing out the air filters is essential maintenance for the entire HVAC system. Air filters help improve the indoor air quality and protects the heating and cooling system. However, when an air filters become clogged or too dirty, they can restrict air flow which wears down the HVAC system faster due to the stress. This added stress causes the HVAC system to work longer and harder, resulting in higher utility bills. Make sure to maintain and change out the air filters all year long.
Let Sunlight In
Another tip to help reduce your utility bills, is to simply let in the sun. Sunlight brings extra warmth, free of charge, into your home. During the day never hesitate to open up the windows, especially those facing the sunny side of the home.
