Check Thermostat & Air Filter when Furnace Won’t Start Up

The reason a gas furnace fails to ignite may be due to a number of problems. Before calling out an HVAC technician there are two things you should check first. A gas furnace may not be starting due to the thermostat. Check your thermostat setting, such as the temperature setting, and make sure the thermostat is on Auto and Heat. Next you will want to check the furnace’s filter. This is not your air filter, the furnace has its own filter that often gets forgotten. Make sure the furnace has a clean filter at the beginning of every winter season. If the filter is too dirty the furnace will not start up. However, if it is not the thermostat or the filter, you will need the help of an HVAC technician to inspect and locate the reason why the furnace is not starting up.

Why is Furnace Not Turning On?

Following are some of the common problems that can cause the furnace to fail to ignite or start up.
Gas Supply Line Problems – One common reason why a gas furnace will fail to start or ignite is when there is a problem with the gas supply line. There may be a blockage in the gas supply line or the line may be too small. In some cases, there may be a gas leak which will reduce the flow of gas to the ignitor. The gas supply line will need to be carefully inspected and possibly cleaned out or replaced.
Dirty Gas Burners – Dirt can build up on the burners over time. If enough dirt masks the burner, it will prevent the burners from burning evenly and at the proper height. When the burner becomes dirty, it not only affects the flame size but over time it will clog the burners completely. It is important that the burners are cleaned at the beginning of the winter season. Usually burners are cleaned during a furnace tune-up. If you haven’t had your furnace tuned up yet, you may develop dirty burners and your furnace will fail to ignite.
Damaged Flame Sensor – When a furnace will not stay lit this is often due to a flame senor problem. A flame senor, when compromised or damaged, will not allow the furnace to start up. The flame sensor is the furnace’s safety mechanism and will determine if your furnace will start up. If the flame senor itself has failed or has been damaged, it will need to be repaired or replaced. The flame sensor is often checked first when a furnace fails to start up. An HVAC technician can quickly replace the flame sensor if needed.
