Furnace Making High Pitched Whistling Noise
When your furnace begins to whistle, this can point to a few different issues, mostly problems with the air ducts. When you first hear whistling, check the air filters. When an air filter becomes dirty, the air becomes restricted which can cause a whistling like noise. Another cause for whistling is a leak in the air ducts or an obstruction in the air ducts. If you hear whistling after changing out the air filters, then the problem is within the air duct system. If it is a problem in the air ducts, you will need an HVAC technician to help seal and look for obstructions.
Furnace Rattling Vibration Noise
When your furnace begins to make a rattling noise, this can be a major issue. There are three types of rattling and depending on the type of rattling, the solution may be simple. If you would describe the rattling as a vibration this could simply be the furnace vibrating against another piece of equipment. Vibration can be stopped with a cushioning. However, rattling may also be due to a screw coming loose which will need to be tightened down before it comes out completely and gets jammed up inside the moving parts of the furnace.
Furnace Making Loud Rumbling or Grinding Sound
When you hear a loud grinding sound from the furnace, often it is due to a problem with the furnace’s motor. The furnace fan motor will often make a grinding sound when the bearings wear out. Bearings can be replaced as long as the damage to the rest of the motor is minor. However, if the motor overheats, major damage may have occurred which will require the entire motor to be replaced.
Furnace Makes Banging Noise
Is the furnace making a banging sound? Banging can be an issue of oil-canning which is an air duct issue. The second cause for a banging problem is an ignition roll-out which is a small explosion. In greater detail oil-canning is when the air ducts have a weak spot and the metal will flex. As is flexes, it will sound like a bang. The weak spots are often because the air ducts are not supported correctly. A simple fix is to provide a support in the weakened area. Ignition roll-out is a more alarming issue as the banging occurs due to a small explosion which can lead to a fire. If the banging occurs each time the furnace starts up, you may have ignition roll-out. If you are hearing the banging during start up, turn off the furnace and contact an HVAC technician before running the furnace again.
