Why is My Central Air Conditioner Running but Not Cooling the House in Canyon Gate, NV?

An air conditioner unit, when it fails, will leave the home hot and uncomfortable. During the middle of the summer season in southern Nevada, temperatures can become so hot it can be life threatening. When the air conditioner stops making cool air, it can be due to a few different causes. Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioningwill share some of the common reasons why an air conditioner will stop making cool air.

Dirty Air Filter

The air filters play a major role on the overall health of the air conditioner. The air filters prevent dust and debris from entering the air conditioner. The air filters also help to clean the air inside the home. When the air filters are dirty, it will restrict the air flow and the flow from inside the home which is an important part of the cooling process. When the air filters are dirty it can also cause the evaporator coils to ice up and the air conditioner will fail to complete the cooling cycle. If your air conditioner system fails to create cool air, start by checking the air filters. If they are severely dirty that may be the reason why the cooling system failed. Change out the air filters and see if the home will begin to properly begin the cooling cycle.

Refrigerant Leak

When the refrigerant is low, the air conditioner will not be able to create cool air. However, the refrigerant doesn’t run low through use. During the cooling process the refrigerant is essentially recycled and replenishes itself. If the refrigerant is low, it is due to a leak somewhere in the cooling system. Often the leak will develop in the evaporator coil or its copper tubing. The leak will need to be located and repaired. Once repaired, the refrigerant needs to be refilled or the air conditioner will not be able to cool down the home. In order to refill the refrigerant and repair a leak, you will require an HVAC technician as they are the only ones able to refill refrigerant. If your air conditioner fails to cool down the home, you may need to have the refrigerant checked for leaks.

Failing Compressor

When the air conditioner runs a cycle it will suck up the air inside the home and then cool it down. The compressor is an essential component that takes in the warm air inside the home and the refrigerant will compress them together to create the cool air for the home. At times the compressor can wear down and begin to fail. Over the life time of the air conditioner, it is common to replace the compressor at least once.

Broken Fan Motor

At times the cooling cycle is running smoothly without any problems. When the home stays hot however, often the problem is the fan or its motor. The fan is the circulatory system which helps move the cool air throughout the home. If the fan belt is broken or it’s loose the fan will not rotate. Other times the fan’s motor can overheat or break down and the fan will never turn on. When a fan motor begins to break down it will make a loud screeching noises.
