Check Thermostat Settings

The very first thing that you want to check when you have this problem is the thermostat. More often than you would think, there is a setting that isn’t quite right. You need to make sure the heat is in fact on, and the temperature is set where you would feel most comfortable. You can also make sure the fan isn’t turned on. If it is, you will have air blowing from the vents around the clock, even when the furnace isn’t actively heating the air. Switch that fan to off and see if the problem is solved.

Inspect AC Condensate Line

Hopefully, you have a high efficiency furnace in your home. If you do, there is always a byproduct while they are functioning. This condensed liquid is usually nothing you need to worry about because it drains away. Sometimes, there is a clog in the condensate drain line and it can cause cold air to come out of the vents as well as leak some water.

Is Furnace Pilot Light Out?

There is a pilot light in every furnace, and if yours isn’t lit, you aren’t going to get warm air coming from your vents. The pilot light may simply be out, or it isn’t getting lit properly. Sometimes, this is caused by a blockage of soot and dirt, or the thermocouple may be malfunctioning.

Is Gas Supply Sufficient

If you have a furnace that uses natural gas to operate, it is going to need plenty of it to get the job done. Make sure the gas supply hasn’t been turned off for one reason or another. You should also check to make sure the gas valve wasn’t closed. When both of those options check out, you may have a blocked line that is interrupting the flow of gas.
