Why is Air Conditioner Leaking Water Outside in Green Valley Ranch, NV; Condensation & More

Whenever you walk outside to check on your AC unit only to find that it is leaking somewhere, it is concerning. You may be wondering what could be going on with your unit, as well as what needs to be done to fix it. There are several reasons that your AC unit could be leaking water. Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning is here to talk about what could be causing your AC unit to start leaking.

Common Reasons for a Leaking AC Unit

Listed below are the common causes for AC leaking.
Disconnected Drain Line: It is important that your AC unit is installed correctly or you may end up with a drain line that is leaking as time goes on. Sometimes this drain line will completely disconnect from the connection that is found inside your unit.
Clogged Condensate Drain: There is a great deal of debris that can end up clogging your condensate drain. Some of those debris include algae, rust and dirt. You may have to clean this drain out from time to time to avoid leaking.
Cracked Condensate Drain: It is very common for your drain pan to rust and end up cracking due to rust. When this happens it also breaks the seal and causes leaking.
Cold Temperatures: If the temperature drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit and you are still trying to run your AC, it is too cold and could cause your coils to ice up. This will be the cause of leaking water.
Dirty AC Filter: Your filter is essential for your unit to get the airflow it needs to operate. When the airflow is blocked with a dirty filter, it causes your coils to ice up. As those coils melt, the water falls into the drain pan and causes it to overflow.
Low Refrigerant Levels: This is similar to a dirty filter. Low refrigerant levels will lead to frozen coils that will end up causing your drain pan to overflow.

How Much Leaking of Air Conditioner is Normal?

When your AC is running normally, you will see small amounts water leaking. This is normal when it is working to cool your house on an especially hot day. This is caused by condensation near the drain pipe. If you see a small puddle of water, it isn’t something that should alarm you. However, when there is a significant amount of water in that area or even inside the unit, it is a cause for concern and you should call a professional right away to fix the problem.
