Your home is a place you want to keep comfortable so you can enjoy being there. Most homes have things that are there to add ease and comfort in daily life. It can be anything from using a dryer to get your clothes dried and wrinkle free. It can be the lights in your house that you can use at the flip of a switch. These accommodations are now something that most people come to rely on and don’t want to be without. The air conditioner is also a huge part of what we need to use through the year and to make sure that your house is a temperature that is comfortable for you and your guests. Your air conditioner can be something that can start to have problems any time of the year. One of the things that people may start to notice is that they start to smell heat when the unit starts up. Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning outlines what could cause your AC to smell like something is burning.
Dust Build Up in Air Conditioner
The first and most common reason that people will smell something similar to heat or burning is when they first start to use the unit. This can be the first warm day of the season or the first cold day and you have to switch on the air conditioner or the heater. What happens is that the unit starts up and will heat up the dust and the dust will burn off or heat up. This will then spread the smell in the house and you can usually smell it. The great thing is that it will clear up quite fast and normally does not happen more than the first day. If you notice that it is only a problem on day one it is nothing to be concerned about.
Burning AC Fan Motor
If you notice that you are smelling heat or burning when the unit turns on every time you use it then it is likely a bigger issue. If the smell is continuing then it can be a problem with the fan and the motor. They need to be maintained and cared for so that they are able to move and work with ease. If they are not then they can start to wear out and start to overheat. When the motor and the fan start to overheat they can create the smell of heat that can spread through the house. The odor can continue through the house and continue to happen each time the unit is being used. You want to make sure that it is repaired right away and the moving motor and fan are lubricated properly. This is done when you continue to have maintenance done to the unit.
Dirty AC Coils
Another issue that will cause your home to smell like heat and burning is when the coils are covered with dirt. They need to be kept clean to work properly and cool the house down. They can create a burning smell that might be discernable in the house. You want to make sure that they are cleaned properly.
