Thermostat Problems

When the air conditioner doesn’t turn on, your first step is to check the thermostat. See if the thermostat has been turned off, or needs its battery replaced. Also check the setting and see where the temperature has been set to. Some kids will play with the thermostat and increase the indoor temperature setting. Before fearing the worst, check the thermostat and make sure it is working and set to the right setting and temperature.

Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter can cause the evaporator coils to ice up which will also prevent the air conditioner from turning on. When the air conditioner fails to start up, check the air filters and see if they need to be changed out. The air filters can have a major impact on the air conditioner which is why it is so important to keep the air filter changed out and clean.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

If it is not the thermostat or air filters, next go and check the circuit breakers to the air conditioner. The air conditioning system has its own dedicated circuit line and breakers. If the circuit breaker has been tripped, then reset the breaker and see if that will restore the power to the air conditioner. While checking the breakers, also see if the breaker is loose or damaged. Over time the breakers can wear out and need to be replaced.

Indoor Shutoff Switch

Some HVAC systems will have a shut off switch located inside the home. At times this switch can be accidentally hit or set to the off position. Even if the shutoff switch is located outside, it is worth checking just to make sure. The last thing you want is for an HVAC service person come out to your home just to flip a switch.

Need to Reset AC

Sometimes when the air conditioner will not turn on, you may need to simply reset the unit. You will want to look for the reset button on your air conditioner and press it. Then turn your thermostat off for a few minutes and then turn it back on. This will reset the entire system which may help restore your air conditioning system.
