– Dirty Filter: Your furnace needs proper airflow to run effectively. If you have a filter covered in dust, there are going to be problems with its operation. Short cycling can happen because your furnace is shutting off in an effort to avoid overheating.
– Blocked Vent or Flue: If your furnace doesn’t vent properly, there are dangerous gases including carbon monoxide that can become a problem. These gases are vented out a vent pipe or a flue. It isn’t uncommon for obstructions to cause venting to become much more restricted. This can come from big nests, dead carcasses, or even leaf litter. When this happens, there is a flue limiter that is there as a safety mechanism to avoid these dangerous gases leaking into your home. It can be a cause for the short cycling.
– Damaged Igniter: If you have a hot surface ignition system, there is a component that gets hot and ignites the gas. If this is malfunctioning, the system will shut down before any gas can get ignited. This is another situation where the furnace will kick on to get started only to shut off moments later.
– Damaged Flame Sensor: There is an important flame sensor in your furnace that will ensure there is always a flame to ignite the gas so that gas isn’t leaking into your home. If natural gas builds up, it can become an extremely dangerous situation for your home.
