What Happens when an Air Conditioner Short Cycles in Silverado Ranch, NV & How to Fix Short Cycling

When it comes to your AC system, there are several problems you can run into. Some of them are going to be more severe than others. One problem that you certainly don’t want to deal with is short cycling. Unfortunately, it is one of the most damaging issues that we see in AC systems. Usually, when you have this problem, it isn’t something that you can take care of on your own. Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning is here to talk about short cycling and why it is a problem you don’t want to have.

What is Considered Short Cycling?

If you have an AC unit that is having a problem with short cycling, this means that it never gets to finish a full cooling cycle. It is constantly in the state of kicking on and starting up, only to shut down shortly after that. If your AC is working the way that it should, the compressor would power up when the thermostat signaled a higher temperature than wanted, and then when that temperature is reached it would power down. A system that is short cycling, never gets to that point of function. This can be extremely hard on your compressor. This can lead to a burnt-out compressor that is incredibly expensive to fix.

Why Does Short Cycling Happen?

There are a few different things that can cause your AC unit to short cycle. Some of them are quite easy to fix and other are incredibly expensive. Here are some of the most common causes:
– Wrong Sized AC Unit: If the unit you have in your home isn’t the right size, it can cause big problems. Short cycling can be caused by a unit that is too large for your house. This is an expensive problem to fix as it usually requires a new unit installed all together.
– Clogged Air Filter: Your unit needs to have proper air circulation to function properly. If your filter hasn’t been changed in months, it’s time to get on that. You should be changing your air filter every 1-3 months to keep your AC working properly.
– Low Refrigerant Levels: If there isn’t enough refrigerant in your AC system, it will struggle. This is usually caused by a leak somewhere. You will need to see if the leak can be repaired, and the refrigerant levels brought back to normal.
