The air conditioner is a rather large cooling system that has a number of different components. Each component has a job when it comes to producing cool temperatures inside our homes. One of one the major components of an air conditioning system is the air handler. The air handler is the second major piece to the air conditioning system (after the outside consenser unit) and is found inside the home. Typically it is found in the attic. The air handler can develop a number of different problems that require inspection and repairs. Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning will share some of the more common problems that occur with air handlers.
Dirty Air Filters
When the air filters are neglected they can allow dust and dirt to enter the air handler as it is the first component between the air filters and the rest of the air conditioning system. When dirt gets inside the air handler it can cause clogs in various parts within the air handler. It is important that homeowners remember to change out the air filters to prevent clogs and other problems with the air handler and the entire air conditioning system. Air filters here in Nevada should be changed out once a month due to our dusty and windy climate.
AC Fans Running at Low Speed
There are fans inside the air handler which blows the cool air throughout the home. Often the air handler’s fan can develop problems where they seem to spin slowly or are a bit sluggish. When the air handler’s fans goes out, it can take longer for the home to cool down and the air conditioner will run longer. Fans can wear out due to age or a piece of debris that is interfering with the fans. Fans also need to be cleaned and lubricated to maintain top performance. If the air coming out of the air vent seems lower than normal, then it may be the air handler fan slowing down. The fans can be cleaned or if needed, replaced as it develops problems.
Clogged Evaporator Coils
Inside the air handler is the evaporator coils. The evaporator coils are essential in aiding in the production of the cool air that flows throughout the home. The evaporator coils frequently get dirty as they develop moisture which can trap in dirt and dust easily. As a result, evaporator coils can become clogged and need to be cleaned. When the evaporator coils become dirty, often the air handler or air conditioner outside will ice up which is a common sign it is time to clean the evaporator coils. The evaporator coils is made of very fine steel fins that can be bent or damaged easily. It is strongly recommended to have the evaporator coils cleaned by a professional service to prevent damaging the fins.
