During the summer months here in Las Vegas the weather gets extremely warm. If your air conditioner is getting older you may be nervous that your unit will not make it through this summer. When we come out to do maintenance appointments on older units many of our customers will ask us if we think that their air conditioning unit is going to last another long hot summer. It is impossible for us to know how long your air conditioning unit will keep working but we can give you some things to look out for. If any of these things start happening, you can give us a call right away and we can come out and check it out. Many times, if you catch a problem right away it can be fixed without it costing as much as it would if you let it go for a few weeks or more before calling.
AC Blowing Warm Air
One sign that your air conditioner needs to be looked at is that it starts blowing warm air. Sometimes when this happens you almost feel like you are just going crazy. You can hear the air conditioner running but your house is just getting hotter. It can take a minute to realize that you are not just hot because it is over 100 degrees outside but because your air conditioner is blowing hot air.
AC Not Blowing Air Through Vents
Another frequent problem is that your air conditioner is not blowing very much air. Your air conditioning unit will turn on and blow cold air, but the airflow is extremely weak. If you put your hand in front of one of your air conditioning vents when your unit is running and not much air is coming out it is likely a clogged duct or a failing compressor. The longer that you let your unit continue to run with these problems the more damage that it will cause.
AC Making Loud Buzzing, Pulsating or Whistling Noise
Sometimes you will hear strange sounds when your air conditioning unit is running. Squealing, grinding, shaking, and grating noises are all common for air conditioning units that need some work done. Just think of the sound as a warning sign that something inside is not working correctly. It is like when a baby is crying because they need their diaper changed. Once the problem is taken care of the problem will go away with both a baby and your air conditioning unit.
AC Vents Smell Musty or Like Gas or Sewage
When your air conditioning unit is running you may smell something coming out of the vents. There is nothing good about gross smells coming from your air conditioning vents. The smells can be seriously disgusting to breathe in. Many times, the smells are a sign of mold or mildew growing in your ductwork. Mold and mildew in your home can cause all sorts of health problems for you family so you will want to get it checked out immediately.
Broken Thermostat
In addition to your air conditioning unit going out you could also experience problems with your thermostat. Sometimes the thermostat is set for one temperature, but your house is a significantly different temperature. For example, if you have your thermostat set for 75 degrees but your house is actually 65 degrees your thermostat is probably not working anymore. It can be hard to tell if it is a problem with the thermostat or the air conditioner without the help of one of our amazing technicians here at Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning.
