How Do You Know if Your Furnace Went Out or is Broken?
1: The color of your burner flame– Your burner flame should always glow blue. If you notice your flame is yellow or flickering, this is a dangerous sign that your furnace could have a carbon monoxide leak. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless gas that claims the lives of about 400 Americans annually. This is one of the most important signs to watch for. 2: You detect a strong gas odor near your furnace– If you smell gas around your furnace, shut down your furnace immediately! Open your furnace, locate the gas supply valve and shut it off. Open any windows or doors you can to air out the space, don’t turn on any lights, don’t light any matches and don’t use a gas burning stove! Call your HVAC company right away!
3: SW Gas or NV Energy bill spikes– Keep an eye on your gas or energy bills. An unusual spike in cost could be due to your aging furnace losing its efficiency. As units get older, especially if they are not regularly maintained, they have to work overtime to keep your home at the desired temperature. In time, this will surely lead to your furnace breaking down completely. Have your HVAC company perform an inspection of your unit to determine if it is the cause of your uprising utility cost.
4: Is your thermostat still working? – If your furnace is struggling to keep your whole home warm, and you find yourself bumping up your thermostat higher than usual to keep your desired temperature, this is a warning sign that your furnace needs repair. The thermostat works in unison with your HVAC unit by telling it how much heat to produce. If it stops working as good as it used to or stops working at all, your furnace most definitely needs to be inspected by a professional.
5: Frequent or constant cycling– If you can hear your furnace turning on and off frequently, this is a warning sign that it’s over cycling. The most common causes for this is a clogged filter, lack of proper air circulation or the thermostat malfunctioning.
