Indoor Air Quality Standards & How to Improve in North Las Vegas, NV with Duct Cleaning & More

Have you ever had a coughing fit after inhaling dust or fumes from a cleaning product? You may think that the air in your home is healthy, but it may just be worse than the air outside your home. The obvious contaminates are dust, mold, pesticides, cleaning products and other airborne chemicals. These can have a negative impact on the air you’re breathing. There are other pollutants that may both pose a serious problem on their own, but the cumulative effects can pose serious health risks.

Facts about Indoor Air Quality

1. Health effects or poor indoor air quality may take years to show up. Poor indoor air quality causes symptoms like eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness and fatigue. These are short term symptoms that can be eliminated by removing the source of the problem and by using high-quality HEPA filters to purify the air. There are symptoms that may not appear for months or years and include respiratory diseases, heart disease, impaired cognitive function and even cancer.
2. Indoor air pollution is more of a problem than outdoor air pollution. Recent studies have shown that levels of common air pollutants can be 2-5 times higher than the outdoor air. This is true in even the largest and most industrialized cities. Add that to the fact that we spend about 90% of out time indoors, this is bad news.
3. Any home is susceptible to poor indoor air quality, regardless of how tightly it is sealed. Homes that are air-tight are more likely to have a buildup of stale and polluted air. Pollutants can accumulate when fresh air can’t get in and create health issues. Many brand-new homes are under-ventilated. On the flip side, homes that are not airtight can be problematic because weather conditions can reduce the amount of outdoor air that comes into a home. This can make a home that is considered “leaky” at risk of pollutant buildup.
4. Common household items contribute to indoor air pollution. The most common household items cause poor indoor air quality. Everyday products release fumes into the air and cause issues. Cosmetics and household furnishings can also contaminate the air in your home. Without proper ventilation, these particles can build up and get to dangerous levels. Pollutants can also become worse when temperatures or humidity levels are high.
5. Indoor air quality research is still questionable. We do know that pollutants that are usually found indoors causes health issues, we just aren’t exactly sure what concentrations or periods of exposure cause specific health problems. With more research, there will be more understanding. But for now, it’s important to take precautions to improve indoor air quality to avoid any health problems.
