Here in southern Nevada the transition period from summer into fall and then into winter can happen very quickly. Our fall seasons are often warm enough to still use the air conditioning. We then have a short period where the HVAC system may not be in use until suddenly, the heater kicks on. As it seems we may have 6 weeks or longer to use our cooling system, you will want to begin taking steps to better prepare for autumn. Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning will share what steps you can take now so as to prepare for the seasonal transition.
Winterizing Your Home
As the season begins to slowly change, you may want to begin preparing your home in early fall and before winter sets in. Preparation is key in assuring your HVAC system is and will be functioning efficiently. You will also want to prepare your home inside, so as to improve efficiency within the home as well.
Air Sealing Home
Starting inside the home you will first want to make sure the exterior doors and windows are properly sealed when closed so that no air can come in or out. You may need to replace weather stripping around the doors and windows or even use draft snakes to help improve insulation. Check the exterior door and window outer framing and make sure they don’t require fresh caulking to ensure they are sealed. Now is also a good time to check your home’s air filters and make sure they are clean. Ceiling fans can be rotated so they go clockwise, which helps to circulate the air but not create cool air. Another recommendation is to have the air ducts and registers cleaned if it has been more than three years since the last cleaning. This way you get all of the summer pollen and debris out of the air ducts and give your indoor air a fresh start. Just before the cooling season ends, and if you have a ground unit, check the area surrounding the unit. Make sure there are no weeds, tall grass or debris around the unit. As we enter into the fall season, make sure to keep the unit area clean and free of leaves.
Schedule a HVAC Tune Up
Early fall is the best time to schedule an HVAC tune-up or checkup. At this time you will want the entire HVAC system inspected, which should include the air ducts, for the presence of any leaks or damages. The air conditioner and furnace should be inspected cleaned and prepped. You will want to make sure there is no outstanding wear on your air conditioner system as you will want it in perfect order come next year. At the same time, you will want to have the furnace checked and ready for when the cold finally moves in. You never want a problem to be present just as you need you home heating system the most.
