You will want to clean up around the outside of the unit. If debris has blown in or vegetation has grown around the outdoor unit you will want to clean up and cut the vegetation down. You want to make sure the outdoor unit has plenty of air circulation and that there is not debris or vegetation surrounding the unit. After you have cleaned around the outdoor unit, changed the air filters and cleaned the vent and registers, you are done. The rest should be left to an HVAC technician.

To properly prepare an air conditioner for winter, you will want to have the air conditioner tuned-up.
