As the weather cools down many Las Vegas residents are starting to turn their heaters on to keep their homes nice and warm. When our customers begin turning on their heaters, we here at Air Supply Heating and Air Conditioning start getting phone calls about odd smells coming from their heater. We want to take some time to go over the smells that you may be noticing and what you should do about them.

Furnace Smells Like Burning Dust

One of the most common smells that we get questions about is a dusty or burning smell. This is indeed a normal smell when you first turn your heater on. During the summer months dust and dirt settle on the different components inside your heating system. When you turn your heater on those dust particles will burn away which causes a dusty or burning smell. This smell should only last for a day or two. If you still smell it after a few days you will want to give us a call.

Musty Smell from Furnace

Another very common smell that people notice is mildew or musty smell when your heater is working. Even though this smell is common it is not ideal. The musty smell is normally caused by a buildup of bacteria on the coils in your heating system. This is a problem that you will want to address right away. Air Supply Heating and Air Conditioning can send out one of our certified technicians to come and inspect your coils.

Furnace Smells Like Rotten Eggs

Many people will smell rotten eggs or sulphur when they turn their heater on. This is not normal! If you smell rotten eggs or sulphur this could be a sign that you have a gas leak. If a gas leak goes undetected you could have a fire or explosion in your home. You will definitely want to have someone come and fix any leaks immediately so that you can keep your home and family safe.
Other people will notice a burning electrical smell. A burning electrical smell could be caused by a variety of things inside your heating system. Frayed wires or a failing motor are the most frequent causes of this smell. You will definitely want to give Air Supply Heating and Air Conditioning a call if you notice a burning electrical smell.
