If you made it through the summer with an air conditioning unit that was just barely hanging on you may be wondering if it is time to think about replacing it now that the weather is starting to cool down. The thought of replacing your air conditioning unit in the middle of summer may have been too overwhelming. For many people vacation plans, increased utility bills, and other things may have deterred them from replacing their unit over the last few months. Now that some of those things are past us it may be the right time to go ahead and replace your air conditioning unit. Today Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning is going to highlight the things that you will need to consider before making your purchase. Since an air conditioning unit is a larger purchase you will want to know that you have done your homework and are purchasing the unit that will be the best for your home.
BTU Air Conditioner Calculator
The first thing you will want to know is how big of a unit you will need for your home. When people talk about the size of their air conditioner they refer to the BTUs. BTU stands for British Thermal Units. This is the cooling capacity of your unit. To calculate what size unit you will need simply multiply the length times the width of the room or the area to be cooled. Then multiply that number by 25 BTU. We do not recommend purchasing a unit larger or smaller than this size. If you do not have the correct size unit your home will not cool properly.
Good SEER Rating
Next up you will want to look at the energy efficiency of the air conditioning unit. Energy efficiency of air conditioning units is rated with a SEER rating. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The higher the SEER rating the more efficient your unit will be. This is an especially important thing to consider here in Las Vegas where we have such extreme temperatures during the summer months. Having an air conditioning unit that is energy efficient will save you money each and every month.
You will also want to look at the warranty that comes with the unit. Clearly the goal is that you do not want the unit to break down but you need to have some reassurance that if it does break down it will be taken care of. Not all air conditioning units come with the same type of warranties. Read the fine print when you are making your purchase.
