Why Is My Air Conditioner Running but Not Cooling the House in Las Vegas, NV? Expect a Higher Level of Service

You are going through the day and it starts getting warmer in your home. You walk over to your thermostat to see what is going on. You then start to notice that the AC has stopped blowing cold air. Why is this happening and what do you do? Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning offers helpful troubleshooting tips below.

Clogged Air Filters

One of the most common reasons why your AC stops blowing cold air is because you have clogged or dirty air filters. Air filters can work overtime trapping dust, pollen, hair, and debris from getting up inside your system. It does not take long before the air filters become dirty. If they are not changed out regularly then the airflow cannot flow correctly into your home and your AC. When it struggles to flow, then the AC unit may shut off. If you do not change out your air filters you can wear out the parts of your AC faster. If left too long it can start to affect the evaporator coils and the condensers and even cause a much bigger problem.

Leaking Refrigerant

If your air filters are not the problem then it could be that you have a leak or low refrigerant. It may be that the unit is just running low and needs additional refrigerant. But there is a good chance that there is a leak. If you have a leak, it keeps your AC from cooling properly. If you think it is a refrigerant leak then you need to call a professional to come and check out your AC.

Dirty Evaporator Coils

If you are keeping your air filters clean then it will also help keep your evaporator coils clean. But evaporator coils can start to wear out over time. They consistently have moisture and can start to have problems with mold and mildew. Coils can also freeze up if you have low refrigerant. If you have issues with your evaporator coils this can be a huge disruption to your air conditioner unit and you need to see a professional to come fix it.

Blocked Air Vent

Just like with air filters if your vents are clogged it can start to cause problems. The ventilation system runs through the house if there is something that is blocking or something that is making the ductwork leak then it can affect the cooling of your house. Any tears or holes in the duck work can be the reason you are not receiving cold air. You can notice a blockage if one room feels warmer than the rest of the house. Vents can get closed by accident, so make sure you check the room that is warm to make sure the vent is fully opened before you call a professional.

Thermostat Problems

When you notice that your house is not cooling down the first thing you should do is go check the thermostat. Make sure that your thermostat has not changed. Make sure it is still set to the temperature that you want and it is set to auto or cool. If you have other people living in your house they may have switched it without you knowing. If the settings are correct on your thermostat and you have changed or checked the batteries then it is time to call a professional.
