Furnaces that heat many homes across America use many different components that require regular inspection and servicing. Each component works together to help heat your home during the cold winter season, which is why it is important to ensure each component is working together properly. When your furnace is well maintained you will avoid many of the failures your furnace might experience when you need it most. Air Supply Heating and Air Conditioning will share the various components of a furnace that should get inspected and serviced regularly.

Parts of a Gas Furnace System

  • Igniter – Older furnace systems use a pilot light to ignite the gas or propane. Pilot lights were designed to continually burn and are constantly on stand by for when the thermostat calls for heat. However, with modern furnaces, glow sticks have replaced pilot lights. These glow sticks are made of a silicone nitride. The glow stick is activated when the thermostat signals the need for more heat, which is safer.
  • Burner – The burner is the component that sends fuel to the igniter and where the two meet. Small amounts of gas are sent to the igniter creating combustion. This happens when the thermostat sends the message that the home requires heating. The burner is sometimes referred to as the combustion chamber.
  • Heat Exchangers – The heat exchangers are found just above the burner. The heat is being created by the burner, or the burning fuel warms the colder air within the heat exchanger. Once the needed temperature is met inside the heat exchanger. The blower then turns on and begins to distribute the warm air within the home or building. The blower will continue to circulate even after the inner combustion sequences have stopped to ensure all of the warm air within the heat exchanger has been used.
  • Flue Vents – The flue vents exhaust gases as a result of the combustion process which is carried outside. Depending on the age of your home’s furnace, newer and more efficient models use a secondary combustion chamber that is designed to capture the gases. Once the gases are inside this secondary chamber, the gases are compressed and burned to reclaim the remaining energy found in the exhaust gases.
  • Plenum – The plenum is located near the heat exchangers. The plenum’s job is to collect the cold air inside the home as the furnace begins to cycle. Due to the pressure difference inside the furnace the cold air is forced inside the plenum where it is then heated. Once again the plenum releases the heated air from the heat exchanger into the air ducts where the blower circulates the air throughout the home.
