Throughout the country increased temperatures are here to stay for the summer. As the heat rises, air conditioning units are getting a workout on a daily basis. Here in Las Vegas our extremely high temperatures cause our air conditioning units to work even harder. Consequently, we spend a lot of time thinking and talking about our air conditioning units. The more that we talk about our air conditioning units the more myths that we are likely unknowingly told about them. Today Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning want to bust some of those myths for you.
Should I Turn Off My AC When I’m Not Home?
The first myth that we want to bust is that turning your air conditioning unit off when you are not home will save you money. In an effort to save themselves money, many homeowners believe this myth and start turning off their air conditioning unit when nobody is home. They believe that since their unit is not running as often, it will not cost them as much to keep their home cool. This is absolutely not true! When you turn your unit back on upon your return, your unit has to work hard to get your home back to a comfortable temperature. This ends up costing you more money than if you just would have increased the setting on your thermostat by 5-7 degrees while you are gone and kept your home somewhat cool while you were gone. You can actually keep yourself more comfortable AND save money by not believing this myth.
Should I Get a Bigger Air Conditioning Unit?
Next up on our list is the myth that upgrading your air conditioning unit to a larger unit will help keep your home cooler more effectively. They believe that having a larger air conditioning unit will hep you be more comfortable in your own home. This is simply not a true statement. When the builder selected the air conditioning unit for your home they took the size of your home into account. They picked the size of your air conditioning intentionally. If you upgrade to a larger unit your air conditioning unit will not know that the space it is cooling is smaller. It will move the air around inside your home as if your home was larger. All that happens is that you consume more energy to produce the same results that the properly size unit was giving you before.
Should I Only Call an HVAC Technician when I Need AC Repair?
The last myth that we are going to discuss is that you only need to have a technician look at your air conditioning unit when there is an issue with it. The old adage “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” is often quoted along with this myth. The truth is that maintenance appointments are extremely helpful for your air conditioning unit. When technicians come out and perform a maintenance appointment they can address issues while they are still small. This will help your unit last longer and work more effectively in the meantime.
