Dirty Air Filters

When there is an air flow restriction, it can cause ice to build up which puts stress on the fan. When the fan’s motor becomes overly stressed it will shut down. As a result, the fan will not spin. Before you contact an HVAC technician, try checking and changing out the air filters first to see if that restores your air conditioner. If ice has accumulated on your air conditioner unit, turn off the air conditioner and allow the ice to melt before turning it back on.

Tripped AC Breaker

When the condenser is stressed out from a dirty filter or other problems, the breaker to the air conditioning system may trip. When the power supply has been cut off, the condenser’s fan motor will not be able to operate. Another common problem with a simple fix is to reset the breaker. You can do this yourself. Faulty AC Fan Belt

Some condenser fans use a belt to rotate or spin the fan. Over time, the belt can slip off or break. When the belt isn’t in place, the fan will not spin even though the rest of the air conditioning system is fine. The belt often needs to be replaced. It may seem simple, but to ensure you get the right belt and that the belt is properly installed, seek an HVAC technician.

Faulty AC Capacitor

One of the more common reasons why a condenser fan will fail to spin is when there is a dead capacitor. The air conditioner’s capacitor is a small and cylinder shaped component that sends energy signals to power the fan motor and to other parts of the air conditioner.
